Dressing to Enhance

Your Portrait

We will help you to select the background most suitable to your needs. Together we will try to match the shade of your clothing with the selected background. Clothing which contrasts with the background tends to dominate the portrait and thus take away from the people.

Consider the location where the portrait will be displayed. Study the relationship between your initial choice of clothing and the decor in the room itself. If you lay the clothing out on the couch in the area where the portrait will be hung, clashes will become apparent. Make your final selection just as if you were choosing throw pillows. This will assure that you choose garments that are most flattering.

Choose a color theme that simplifies the look of you rfamily portrait as well. Too many busy patterns and colors are especially distracting in group portraits. To create a unified look, select a color theme that blends well. While all the clothing does not have to match, the colors should be complimentary. Coordinate the clothing for all subjects in a group portrait so that no one person dominates the scene. A family group should choose clothing that blends with each member’s attire as well as with the background, thus creating a harmonious group as a whole.

When photographing outdoors, the background can be very busy. It is important to choose only one or two theme colors, with your family wearing shades of those colors. Simplicity of two colors helps separate the family from the scenery. Blues are excellent all year, while white, ivory and khaki are excellent against green foliage. Burgundy, brown, tan and grey are better for the fall season. Avoid all greens outdoors as they tend to clash with Mother Nature.

With a business suit, a pure white shirt or blouse with a dark jacket will emphasis the neck rather than the face. A pastel, thin stripped or soft patterned shirt with a subtle tie is preferable.

When photographing children, play cloths, while cute, detract from your portrait. Their appeal is usually short lived. It is best to select clothing which will stand the test of time. Clothing which is timeless will yield an image that can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Shoes and stockings are often overlooked. They should complement the rest of the clothing in the portrait. Carefully consider your apparel from head to toe as a variety of full-length as well as close-up portraits may be taken.
